Varsity Spring 2011

Now in our 9th year of middleschool and 6th year as a varsity baseball club, the Raleigh Hawks provide an outlet for homeschool boys to compete with local schools in our area. The Hawks middleschool boys were NC State Homeschool champions in 2011. The Hawks varsity also finished 3nd in the NC Homeschool State Championships and, with most of their starters returning, hope to have a strong team again this year. Our foundation has been hard work, prayer and dedication to Christian character. Hawks' team leadership and coaching is provided by homeschool dads who are concerned with building young men who grow in holiness, confidence, skill, maturity and trust in the Lord. We believe that when we focus on these principles, God will provide us with the necessary tools, talents and abilities to be a competitive program.

 
Middle school
2010

Age requirement:
Middle schoool: 13 and under as of Sept. 1, 2011
Junior Varsity: 16 & under as of Sept. 1, 2011 (jv roster also includes younger varsity members and selected middle sclhool players when needed)
Varsity: 18 & under as of Sept. 1, 2011 

Skill level:  Players should have previous recreation league or school league experience.




Tryouts
All new and returning players are required to try out for the team on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, 1:00 to 3:00 OR Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, 1:00 to 3:00 @ Wilder's Grove, 4204 Willow Oak Rd., in Raleigh. If you absolutely cannot make one of these two tryouts, please contact Matt Finneran BEFORE the tryout date at finneranmc@aol.com. Tryouts will be run in a practice format and includes a radar clock on throwng speed and a 60 yard sprint. 

Pre-season practices: Jan 11. to Feb. 24. We will begin weekly practices in January for all teams.

In case of inclement weather, pracitce may be cancelled or moved indoors. If indoors, there will be an additional charge per player per practice (paid at the practice),

Cost: $60 per player ($30 additional) for all pre-season practices. Those participating in Hawks basketball program pay $30 ($15 additional).

Regular Season Practices (Feb. 28 – May 18)
Tuesday: Middleschool 1:30 to 3:30. JV/Varsity, 3:30 - 5:45
Wednesday: 4:00 to 5:30 (sometimes reserved for clinics and selected players,)
Fridays: Middleschool 1:30 to 3:30. JV/Varsity, 3:30 - 5:45

The number of practices will be determined by games on the schedule for that week. For most of the season we try to limit the total number of games and/or practices per week to 3 or 4. Times may be adjusted to accommodate coaches' schedules. On a week where no possible practices can be held due to games, a Saturday practice may be scheduled. On Tue/Fri practice dates where full teams are not able to attend, all teams might practice at the same time, 3:30 to 5:45. Inclement weather may require practices to be canceled. If we decide to move a practice indoors it may require an additional fee per player to cover additional rental costs. That money will be collected at the actual practice.

Practice Location: Wilder's Grove
Wilder's Grove is located at 4204 Willow Oak Rd., in Raleigh. Take HWY 64/264 East to New Hope Rd. Go north on New Hope and proceed across Business 64/New Bern. Go to the next light (Willow Oak) and turn left. The entrance to Wilder’s Grove is on the left.

Game Schedules
We are presently putting together the schedule for all three teams. The present incomplete schedule is listed below.

The middle school's first game is Tue., Mar. 6, at Wilson Christian Academy. The varsityi first game is with Durham Academy on Thursday, March 1.

Regular Season Costs
MARCH - MAY Costs: $95 per month (three payments: March, April, & May), $60 for additional child. Cost includes all practices and regular season games. Cost does NOT include tournament fees, special clinic fees, practice jerseys or uniforms.

Additional Costs
Uniforms: Jeseys will be ordered the last week of January. Practice Jerseys will be ordered the last week of Februray. Costs to be determined.

Liability Fee: $11 per middleschool player, $16 per jv/varsity player

Tournaments: Cost is usually between $30 and $30 per player, not including any necessary travel and lodging costs.

Varsity Homeschool World Series, April 30-May 5, Orlando, Fla., runs about $150 entry fee per player plus travel and lodging expenses. Details to come.

All middle school and varsity players are required to attend the Homeschool State Championships, May 10-12. If you CANNOT make this tournament, please let the coaching staff know at the tryout.


Equipment
All players should provide their own helmet, bat and glove. Protective cups are mandatory. We are REQUIRING all players to purchase an additional wooden bat for practices. Also uniform fees DO NOT include pants, belt or socks.

Fundraising:
Should costs exceed our budget, a team fund-raiser may be required to help cover expenses. We can also offer fund raising opportunities for those families who would like to raise money toward their tournament costs.
