2009-10 Basketball Schedule - Return Response Needed

Hawks:   We have tryouts at Wake Forest next Monday, Sept 28, 1:00 to 3:00 at the Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest.  If you are a returning player from last year, you don't need to tryout unless you are moving up to another age group.  But if you are returning (and not going to be at tryouts) you need to let me know by Monday, Sept 28, 10:00, a.m. so that I hold a spot for you on the team.

Middleschool age 13 or less on Sept 1., 2009
JV age 16 or less on Sept 1., 2009
Varsity age 18 or less on Sept 1., 2009

PRACTICE FOR EVERYONE BEGINS FRIDAY, OCT 2.  Middleschool and JV, 1:00 to 3:00, Varsity 2:00 to 4:00.

Click here for the  2009-10 Raleigh Hawks Basketball Schedule.  Because the schedule is so crowded, we may eliminate some games, but, for right now, this is a good idea of what's to come!

Varsity note: the November 6 game against Westchester Day in High Point. This game takes place the same time as the pre-season homeschool tournament in Greensboro, which runs Nov 6 & 7.  We  elected not to play in the tournament, since we were invited to play in the Bull City Classic in Durham November 27 & 28.  To play in Greensboro would mean two tournament expenses that month.

Mr. Williams and I thought the experience of playing new and/or stronger teams would be more beneficial than participating in the tournament again this year.  With 14 regular season hoomeschool games, regionals and states (if we qualify), and East Coast Championships, that means 25 homeschool games, NOT INCLUDING the preseason.  If we play in the pre-season it is possible to play another homeschool team from our league 6 times in a singe season.

We feel the Hawk program needs a more difficult schedule to bring us to a stronger level.  Last year,
we only played one game against a team that was at a higher level than NRCA (Mt. Zion), and if we're ever going to compete with teams like NRCA, we are going to have to be willing to take on stronger, more athletic programs (even if it effects our win-loss column).  NRCA had to play us last year and then turn around that week and face Ravenscroft (I think they lost by 40).  Cary Academy lost to Ravenscroft by 60.  NRCA and Cary Academy do not have any more talent than us, but they have a schedule that gives constant competition against elite programs forcing them to improve their level of play.

However, having said that, I am not against canceling or possibly rescheduling that game in High Point to play in the homeschool pre-season tournament.  Those who are seniors have been in this tournament  the last 3 years and I don't want to take that opportunity away from you.  Besides, there is the possibility of all tourney recognition among the homeschool community.

Please let me know (varsity players) if, in lieu of the game against Westchester, you'd rather play in the homeschool tournament that weekend.  I am particularly interested in what our seniors want to do.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits; Who pardons all our iniquities; Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit; Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion; Who satisfies your years with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle. -Psalm 103:1-5
