Dear Dads & Daughters:

Let me know if it would be an inconvenience to up the dinner fees to $8.00 plus tax per person.  We have a contact with Bear Rock Cafe who can arrange the catering at that cost.  It normally would be about $14 per person.

Seahawks:
I had enough mistakes in the August info that I'm confused myself.  Some of the dates were wrong and some of the classes had two different names.  I've put the general corrected schedule below with some explanations in red.  I've also attached the corrected forms.

We still have plenty of openings in all classes.  Let me know if you have more questions.  September info to come out next week.

The Seahawks are currently enjoying their twelfth year of competitive swimming. The team is coached by Matt Finneran, homeschool dad of six children. Matt has 21 years age group swim coaching experience and also served as the head coach of the NC State men’s water polo team for 7 years. The focus of the summer program is to develop confident Christian swimmers who are skilled in all strokes and gain the benefits of disciplined training.

July 27, 2009

Seahawks:  Finally, a not-a-nail-biter-all-the-pressure-is-on-me meet (although one team will still have to lose),  this Tuesday at TAC at 6:00 p.m.  We will divide into teams of Silver, Blue and Masters (a nice way of saying out-of-shape parents).  The Silver seam will have lanes 1, 3, 5 and Blue will have 2, 4, 6 for individual events (masters don't swim individual)  During relays, Masters will be 1, 6, Silver 3, 5, and Blue 2, 4.   I will announce the teams on Tuesday...please let me know at Monday's practice if you are NOT coming.

The cost is the same as a regular meet, $5 for one swimmer, $8 per family.

We will meet at 5:15 to help set up for the meet and the pot-luck afterwards upstairs.  12 & unders will warm up 5:30 to 5:45, 13 through masters will warm up at 5:45-6:00.  Most individual events will be 25-50 yards and relays, 100 yards.  We have to stop at 8:00, so please try to be on time.  There will NOT be ribbons but we will have something for each heat winner.

Please bring one main dish, a side dish (salad, dessert or snack), and a drink.  If anyone wants to bring some plates, napkins, cups and plasticware, let me know.  The refrigerator and outlets will be available for keeping food cold or hot.  We also ask that everyone hang around and help with clean up afterwards.

July 22, 2009

Webmasters Note: Sorry. This somehow didn't get posted last week. This is not for today: 7/27/2009. More about our season on the Swim Team Page.

Seahawks:  An incredible and blessed 2nd undefeated, untied season. Who would have guessed it!
We will celebrate today with some games and fun swims (after we work a little!).

Remaining Schedule

Even though the TSA league is over,
we still have swim practices and lessons through the month of July.  And we still have our annual Blue/Silver/Parents meet next Tuesday, July 23, at TAC 6:00 to 8:00 with a meal and awards afterwards....so keep you calendar open.

We will also have some special classes and clinics the first two weeks of August.  That info should be out by Friday.

Tomorrow (Thursday) we have to exit the pool by 2:30 for a swim meet, so we will start water polo at 1:00.  Those who don't do water polo will still swim 12:30 to 1:30.

Schedule, Thursday, July 23.
12:30 to 1:30 Blue team
12:30 to 1:00 Silver & Platinum
1:00 to 2:30:  Water Polo

The cost is $13.00 per shirt.  And please let me know if I've got it wrong.

July 20, 2009

Seahawks:  One more to go!  But as suspected when we first saw the schedule back in May,  Black Horse Run will be the meet to decide the league championships.  We hope everyone can be here for this meet.  Please arrive at 5:15 on the pool deck (directions below).

One note:  Black Horse Run only has a 4 lane pool, which means we can only have two swimmers in the main event (first heat).  Because of the competition level of this meet,  I will be placing the two best swimmers in each main event and the fastest 4 in each relay.

July 10, 2009

Seahawks:  Here's the schedule for Sunday, July 12. at TAC.  You'll enjoy watching this meet because some of the fastest age-group swimmers in the Triangle will be competing.  You will also get to see where your rank as a swimmer.  We will also have your team t-shirts.  If you haven't already done so, please bring payment before you pick up your shirt

Morning session:  All 10 and unders
In the morning session, we have to go in as a team.  There will be a sign outside TAC with our name on it.  We will meet at our sign at 7:30.  We will have a designated team area inside for the swimmers to rest and wait for their events.  Parents are not allowed on the pool deck.  This is quite an inconvenience but we will have coaches and kid pushers from our team to assist them.  Children may go up and down to see their parents but, otherwise, should remain in the team area during the meet. I don't think they will permit any food on the deck.

Warm ups end at 8:15.  The meet starts at 8:30. The morning session will end somewhere between noon and 1:00.

Afternoon session:  All 11 and ups
Everyone should be on the pool deck by 1:15 ready to warm up.   The older swimmers will also stay in our team area.

The afternoon session will end around 5:00-6:00 p.m.

July 7, 2009

Seahawks:
Attached is a .doc file for the TSA waiver.  Please bring tonight if yours is still due.  Only those swimming this Sunday, July 12, need to sign the waiver.

Also attached is the meet lineup for Sunday.  If your child is in 3 events, the cost is $17.50 ea.  If your child is in 5 events (three plus the relays), the cost is $22.50.  Please bring payment tonight.

If you are paying for several items tonight (such as t-shirts, swim meet, TSA championships) please indicate on your check or an envelope with your cash.  Tonight is the last night to purchase t-shirts.

Finally, we need 5-6 parents to arrive at the Jewish Community Center by 4:00 to help set up the meet (we are technically the home team).  Let me know if you can do that.  It would be appreciated by those of the Jewish Community Center.

See you tonight!  With over 100 swimmers on the opposition, this could be our biggest challenge, yet.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU CANNOT MAKE THIS MEET.

The cost is $5.00 per swimmer or $8.00 per family.  As our usual practice, we will collect on the deck.

GREATER RALEIGH MEET, JULY 12

Also,  the TSA championships (GREATER RALEIGH) are on SUNDAY, JULY 12. at TAC. Ten & unders swim at 8:30 a.m. and 11 & ups swim at about 2:00 p.m.  The cost for this meet is $22.50 per person.  However, due to it being a championship meet, we are limited to 5 swimmers per age group.  This is not a novice meet but represents the fastest swimmers from each team in the TSA league. If necessary, from those who wish to go, I will have to select the best swimmers from each age group.  PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE GREATER RALEIGH MEET BY TOMORROW NIGHT.  The meet fees need to be paid to The Christian Community by Wednesday, July 8.

The lap-a-thon brought in over $2500 this year!  Thanks for all your hard work to make it a success.   Our top boy and girl money winners were Sam Clendenin and Hannah Yarborough, at $400 and $178 respectively.

Last week, due to the lap-a-thon, we sent $500 to the Grace Children's Orphanage in South India.  The reason I like supporting them is because the orphanage was founded by a native Indian, David Raju.  When  you send support, you send it directly to the orphanage.  Because there is no American missions organization acting as the middle man, your letters and gifts have a more personal touch.  If you'd like to help the orphanage you can write them at the address below or by e-mail
http://graceorphanage.tripod.com/.  The Christian Community also supports 9 native pastors in India that we also contact and support on a direct basis.  They have need of bibles and bicycles.  If you want to help one of those pastors, please let me know.

Our first swim meet of the summer season is next week, Tuesday, June 16, 6:00 p.m.,  at Lakemont (directions below).  Please be there by 5:15 for a team meeting and prayer.  We start warm ups at 5:30.

Seahawks: There were so many mistakes on the first two versions of swim team info this summer that I'm surprised anyone figured it out.

Ignore anything else you've read or heard for this summer and trust this newly attached version to be accurate. Just to help clarify (and hopefully not add to more confusion) here is some of the information that was not consitent in the mailings:

1.  Tryouts are Monday, June 8, at 12:30, at the Triangle Aquatic Center (TAC).  Only new members to the team need to tryout.  Those who are taking swim lessons should come to tryouts if they need help in assessing their child(s) placement in either beginning or stroke class (see attached, p. 5).

2.  Swim team begins, Monday, June 8.  Practices are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday as follows:

Blue Team Hours
Monday               1:45 -3:00
Wednesday           1:45 -3:00
Thursday          12:30 - 1:30

Silver & Master Team Hours
Monday               1:30 - 3:00
Wednesday           1:30 - 3:00
Thursday             12:30 - 1:30

Platinum Team Hours
Monday               1:00-3:00
Wednesday           1:00-3:00
Thursday             12:30 - 1:30

3. Water Polo is Thursdays, 1:30 to 3:00.
Our first swim meet is Tuesday, June 16.

4.  Swim lessons begin on Monday, June 15, or Wednesday, June 15.  Here is the schedule:

June 15 to July 27
Mondays (seven once-a-week lessons)
12:00 - 12:30          Beginning
12:30 - 1:00          Stroke

June 17 to July 29
Wednesday (seven once-a-week lessons)
12:00 - 12:30          Beginning
12:30 - 1:00          Stroke

4. If you haven't ordered you team suits, yet,  you can order next week at the TAC swim shop.

All other information should be here .  Let me know if you have more questions or if you find another typo!

Seahawks:  Below is the final tally (I hope) of this year's lap a thon (new additions in red).

Awards for Lap a Thon:
If you haven't already done so, please try to get your Lap-a-Thon money in by the first week of swim team (June 8).

Any individuals who raised $125 will be getting the team shorts.  I will try to set this order up before we start back on June 8.

Those individuals who reached the $200 mark also receive paddles, goggles or flippers.  These you will order the first week of swim practice (June 8, 10 & 11) through the TAC store.

If an individual raised $300, you may order your team suit at the TAC shop at any time...you don't have to wait until June 8th or until you get the money in.  This will make sure you have the suit by the first meet.  Just tell them you were one of the swim suit winners.

I have also attached the summer swim team forms.  There was an error on the registration form.  I think it is now corrected.

Thanks again for all your support this year.  If you are not with us this summer, we'll miss not having you around but look forward to seeing you all in the fall again!

Jonathan Elder has been added to the list...and finished 3rd overall.

May 22, 2009 12:24pm

Here's the final results from the Lap-a-thon.  Names in red are those who swam yesterday. Names in black with a red number means that swimmer swam two times with the highest total listed.  And don't forget to look for the one name in gold....our marathon swimmer who did all three days!  If you got left off, or your total is wrong, please let me know.

In total as a team for the three days we swam 8061 lengths, or 201,525 yards, or 114. 5 miles.

And congratulations to our top girl and boy lap swimmers, Jessica Barker and Brian Elder---each swimming over 2 and 1/4 miles.

Seahawks:  If you order your suits today for the summer swim team, that will ensure you have them for the first meet, June 15.  We are ordering from the TAC swim shop.  The girls suit is a polyester at a great price of $34.  This suit, if cared for, should last through the summer and next school year.

They boys is also a polyester.

The shop has suits to try on so you are sure to get the right fit.  Tell them you are with the Seahawiks to get the discount.

The boys are $21 for basic black or $24 for black with blue stripe.

Everyone is required to have the team suit this summer

May 15, 2009

Sehawks:  This is our last week of the regular season and it ends with the lap-a-thon--a one hour challenge of non-stop swimming. You may swim any of the three days (Tue., Wed., or Thursday)   For those who have more than one practice per week, you will swim a set workout I will give you on the day you don't do the lap-a-ton.  Or, as some long course zealots do, you may swim the lap-a-thon two or even three times!

Here's the schedule for all levels:  Try to be on the deck 15 minutes early so we can start on time.  If any parents can help count, that would be great.  Please bring a soccer chair if you can.  On Tuesday you will have the option of swimming it long course or in the lap pool.  If you do it long course,  you will multiply your total lengths by 2.2 l (10 lengths of the 50 meter pool equals 22 of the 25 yard pool).

Don't forget to bring  your sheets! (Attached if you don't have one.)

Tuesday  1:30 to 2:30
Wednesday, 12:30 to 1:30 (water polo follows)
Thursday, 1:30 to 2:30

Matt

We've had a great year!  Thanks for all your support.  And don't forget about our summer team that starts up on June 8 with 6 local swim meets.

The Christian Community
Seahawks Swim Team
Triangle Aquatic Center
Summer 2009

(For practice/lesson times and costs, click here.)

The Seahawks are currently enjoying their twelfth year of competitive swimming and their seventh summer as a neighborhood club.  As a summer club, we are official members of the Tarheel Swimming Association (TSA). Members of the summer Seahawks Swim Club will be eligible to compete in any or all of the Seahawks’ six scheduled TSA  meets and the championship meet in July.

Why a Christian Swim Club?
The Christian Community Swim Club is designed to provide a wholesome foundation for families who desire a swim club guided by Christian values. We believe children are our most important investment. And, as parents, if we’re not careful with our children’s choices and influences we may reap negative results regarding their character and spiritual growth. Today’s youth are being led down a path that fosters immorality, immodest dress, and a lack of respect for parents and authority. Our answer to this ever-growing crisis is to encourage honor, modesty and purity among the children in all our activities at the swim team.

Membership Requirement
We’re looking for families who desire to raise their children under a Christian influence and believe that membership in The Christian Community Swim Club at TAC would be beneficial for their children’s spiritual protection, growth and maturity.  If you’d enjoy fellowship with like-minded families who share these same hopes for their children, then we invite you to consider our swim team for your family this summer.

Location
Practices are held at the new Triangle Aquatic Center (TAC) 275 Convention Drive in Cary, just behind the Sears at the Cary Town Center mall.

Swim Meets
Every Tuesday night, 6:00, at a participating swim club in the Triangle area, beginning June 16 and ending July 28.

Swim Club Tryouts,  Monday, June 8, 12:30
Tryouts and lesson evaluations will be on Monday, June 8, at the Triangle Aquatic Center at 12:30  Tryouts for swim team are mandatory for any new swimmers and recommended for lessons if you are not sure of your child’s abilities.  You may register at the tryout or you may preregister by sending payment with the included registration form (see attached). Your prepayment will be refunded if your child does not qualify for the team.  Swimmers unable to tryout on June 8, may tryout at the beginning of any swim practice or swim lesson.

Parents/Masters Club
This will be our second summer to host a masters swim team.  We will run the master practice format to develop proper stroke technique and build up speed and endurance. Participants should have a rudimentary understanding of swimming strokes and be able to make 25 meters without stopping.

This summer we are going to have a co-ed water polo league on Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:00.  Ages 10 & up. Swimmer must be able to complete the 200 yard individual medley without disqualification, swim 10 x 50 freestyle on the :60, and be able to tread water with hands up for 3 minutes.   Tryouts for water polo will be on Thursday, June 11, at 1:30, and are mandator for any new members.

April 28, 2009

We've finally got a date for our annual lap-a-thon fund-raiser: May 19, 20 & 21.  This is an endurance challenge to each swimmer to see how many laps he or she can swim in 60 minutes (the team record is 174).

I love this event because it is a great builder of confidence to swim long distances. I have seen swimmers who thought 8 to 12 lengths were too difficult become regular 32 and 40 lap swimmers because they pushed their limit by giving their all for this event.  Last year nearly all the participants swam at least 1 mile (72 lengths).

The lap-a-thon was designed to have your kids “earn” part of their swimming experience and keep initial program costs down.  Ten percent of the proceeds go to Grace Children’s Orphanage in southeast India.

Each family (not swimmer) on the swim team is responsible for $12 per month in additional program fees or $100 in fund raising fees through the lap-a-thon. If you are paying the $12 per month up front, you are not required to raise additional money during the lap-a-thon. However, for the endurance experience, all swimmers will still participate in the hour nonstop swim event  And for those who do raise money, we have some awards for individuals exceeding $125 or more.

To record sponsorship, use the attached sign-up sheet and bring it to your swim practice the week of  May 19, 20 & 21. You will do your hour swim during your practice time.  If you have more than one swim practice per week you may choose the day you swim the lap-a-thon or you may swim it more than one day that week.

Individual Awards
Raise $125:   Seahawk team shorts
$200:  above + paddles or flippers or goggles
$300:  above + team swim suit

To qualify for the prizes, lap-a-thon money must be turned in by Thursday, June 4.

Seahawks:

Just a reminder that we are off this week, April 7-9, both swim practice and lessons, for the Easter Week holiday. We, of course, really mean Resurrection Sunday. Without that glorious day, it would be a lot tougher (or better said, impossible) to face all that is going on with our economy and this present administration. It is quite a comfort to take shelter in the One who has all authority with all creation under His headship. May you enjoy celebrating the Risen Lord with your family this week.

All programs start up again next week, April 14-16.

Blessings,

Matt Finneran

P.S.  I lost a computer and internet acess when lightening hit our house this morning, surging through the high-speed cable connection.  For now, I will be checking e-mails once a day at the local library.  So if you need a faster response, please call me at 404-4948.

SEAHAWKS: Congratulations on a great job at NRCA last week! We finished 2nd of 4 teams and kept close to the NRCA girls for good part of the meet. I will send out the final scores and results when I receive them.
SILVER AND PLATINUM TRYOUTS/RETRYOUTS

Those unable to meet the minimum requirements will be allowed to remain on their teams for another month and be given a second chance to re-tryout on January 27-29, 2009. I am doing this to ensure our swimmers maintain a level of preformance once they reach the minimum team requirement they are on. Those on Blue team who would like to tryout for Silver may also do so this week. Those on Silver who would like to tryout for Platinum may also do so, but if they fail, will still have to re-try for Silver.

10 x 50 yard freestyle on the :60 second intervals
1 x 25 yard underwater dolphin, no breath
1 x 200 IM without disqualification

Platinum Team Requirement:

Video Classes, Special Clinic Fundraisers

We have one more week of swimming and then have our 3-week Christmas Break from December 23 to January 8.

The winter session starts up again on Tuesday, January 13. This is precluded with our one week of swim clinics, Jan 6 -8, as a fund raiser to help pay the taxes and debt on our outdoor pool in Brentwood. We know finances are tough, so there is no obligation to participate. But if you can help, it will be greatly appreciated. Your prayers for the outdoor pool are also coveted.

Please register for the fundraiser classes by responding to this e-mail or using the provided form. Include which day and class you are signing up for and the names and ages of your children, along with a phone number. Payment can be made in person at each session.

Video classes: This is an excellent opportunity to fine tune your strokes. The video sessions run for 90 minutes with about 45 minutes in the water and 45 minutes of video analysis. Drills and instruction will be given to help improve flaws in the individual strokes. Each class is limited to 6 swimmers (4 minimum). The video sessions are held at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.

The cost for the video class is $45 per swimmer, $25 for the second child and $20 for each child thereafter. Take two or more classes and the rate is $35 per swimmer, $20 for the second and $15 for the third. Please register for the video classes by responding to this e-mail ASAP. Include which day and class you are signing up for and the names and ages of your children, along with a phone number. Payment can be made in person at the video session. You don't have to be a member of the swim team to take the video classes.

Hawks:  Our next practice for both teams is this Monday, August 10, 6:00 to 8:30 at Wilder's Grove.  Right now we do not have enough players for a middleschool team, but since some other players have shown an interest, we will not make that decision until the end of next week.  We also have at least one or two spots left for the varsity team (see roster below).

Let me know if you are still thinking of trying out.

I've attached the fall information & registration forms for those who did not get one at the last practice.  Middleschool players need not make any payments at this time.

The Raleigh Hawks Boys Middleschool and Varsity BASEBALL teams are holdng tryouts FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 3:30 at Wilder’s Grove. (Directions below.)  If you are interested playing fall baseball with the Hawks, please reply to this e-mail or contact Matt Finneran at 919-404-4948.

Raleigh Hawks Baseball
Now in our 5th year of middleschool and varsity baseball, the Raleigh Hawks provide an outlet for homeschool boys to compete with local schools in our area. Our foundation has been hard work, prayer and dedication to Christian character. Our team leadership and coaching is provided by homeschool dads who are concerned with building young men who grow in holiness, confidence, skill, maturity and trust in the Lord. We believe that when we focus on these principles, God will provide us with the necessary tools, talents and abilities to be a competitive program.

Skill level:  Hardball league experience (Little League, Jr. League, Middleschool High school, etc.) is required.

Varsity Games:  Most varsity fall baseball games will be on Saturdays beginning Sept 12 and run through the month of October.

Middleschool:  Schedule to be determined.

Wilder’s Grove is located at 4204 Willow Oak Rd., in Raleigh.  Take HWY 64/264 East to New Hope Rd.  Go north on New Hope and proceed across Business 64/New Bern. Go to the next light (Willow Oak) and turn left.  The entrance to Wilder’s Grove is on the left.

July 31, 2009

Hawks:  We have a similar situation for the varsity squad this fall as we did in 2008.  Double headers every Saturday beginning Sept 12 through Oct 17 (about 12 games minus rainouts) with playoffs on Oct 24th.  The schedule has not been finalized yet.  So I will be sending out that information and the costs per player (or family) as soon as I can.  Please let me know if you are plannng to play and any of those Saturdays that you CANNOT attend.

We also were invited to enter a 13-14 team (next year's middleschool) in GBI's fall league.  Let me know if you are interested.  We need at least 10 players to commit to be able to enter the league.

We will be having our first pracitce next Friday, August 7, 3:30-5:45 at Wilder's Grove for both teams.  If you know of any other players who might be interested please have them contact me.

May 5, 2009 - 10:52 pm

Hawks:  Fieldcrest Cannon would like us to use the batting cages closer to 4:00 than 5:00 tomorrow.  So we are trying to get to the hotel around 2:30....meaning our van will have to leave from Zebulon around 11:30.

After the cages we will seek a local high school field for additional practice.

Those who are coming up on Thursday morning should try to be at the park by noon (game time is 1:30).

We will decide about our morning team meetings/devotionals the night before, based on the time we play the next day.  Curfew for all players is 11:00 p.m. unless otherwise instructed.

May 5, 2009 - 10:55  am

Hawks:  We'll I guess it would be par for the course to have the last regular season game rained out, just like the first one.  But I haven't given up hope....there's still a chance the sun may come out.  I won't know from NRCA until 1:00.  I will let you know by e-mail when I get the update.

Also, Included below are instructions to Fieldcrest Cannon:

You'll also want to make all the parents aware of our back entrance to the stadium.  We took some damage to the bridge on our main entrance road which has forced us to limit and monitor the traffic.  We can use the bridge during our regular games since we have a smaller window to monitor it but since with this tourney being pretty much an all day thing, I am just going to keep the bridge closed.  With that, inform everyone of our back entrance.
It's pretty simple.  I believe most of you will be staying in a hotel in Cabarrus County which means you'll be taking I-85 North to the stadium. On exit 63, you'll want to take a right off the ramp (opposite direction of what the signs show you to do).  You'll pass by a big Pilot Gas Station and a Waffle House.  Just as soon as you past the Pilot, you'll take a left on Turkey Rd.  Turkey Rd. will dead end into Moose Rd.  There you'll pick up stadium directional signage again.  Take a left on Moose and as soon as you pass over the interstate, you'll see the back entrance to the stadium on your left.

That back entrance is also where our covered batting cage is.  Teams are welcome to use the cage.  Following a normal pre-game batting practice schedule should alleviate any bottlenecks or delays at the cage.  Players and Coaches only please in the clubhouse / batting cage area.  Families, friends and other fans will have to enter the facility through our main gate.

Hawks varsity:  Some of the varsity would like to practice tomorrow, Monday, May 4, before the middleschool game in preparation for NRCA. So we are scheduling a varsity practice at 1:30-3:00 at Wilder's Grove (or whenever the head grounds keeper, Chris Haynes, and his professional crew kick us off!) Please come if you can; it is the last regular practice of the year and our senior's last practice.

Also, stay around to cheer on the middleschool team if you can.  They could use the support.  We are praying we can go out with a win.

Hawks:  Congratulations on the number 3 seed.  This will give us a better opportunity to advance.  The tournament is double elimination.  Our first game is 1:30 on Thursday, but, if we win, we have to play again at 6:30 against Townville, who beat us 8-5 in regionals.

Please come if you can on Wednesday afternoon.  We have permission to use the batting cages and bullpen at the Intimidators stadium (Fiieldcrest Cannon), Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.  It would be best if we got to the hotel at about 3:30 and went together to the park at about 4:30.

Also, try to book your rooms by tomorrow night.   You can book a Saturday departure if you want and change it to Sunday if the need arises.

Please confirm that you received this and let me know your travel plans or if you need transportation.

Hawks:  We are holding an extra practice tomorrow, Thursday, April 16, 3:30 at Wilder's Grove.  Both teams are invited.  Please come if you can.
Also, I asked Ravenscroft to start Friday's game at 6:30, so I can get there in time from the middleschool game which starts at 4:00.  I was given a tentative yes, with the expectation that it would start earlier if I got there earlier.  So please try to be there by 5:15 to make sure we are well warmed up, no matter when we start.

Hawks: Right now the games a go.  Unless it rains beforehand,  any cancellations would probably be done at the field.  I may be able to get an e-mail out around  2:15 to confirm we are playing.  HOWEVER, IF YOU DON'T HEAR FROM ME, THAT MEANS THE GAME IS STILL ON.
Try to be at the field by 2:45.  I won't be there until 3:15...but start warming up and use the batting cages. Matt II  will have the equipment  there.

Coach Matt

April 13, 2009

Hawks:  I will be at the field by 2:30 today to allow for some extra practice time, in case it rains and shortens the 5:45 finish time.  If you can make it early, please do--the middleschoolers could use some extra time in the cage, fielding, etc.
Also, the schedules have changed, even for this week.  I have attached an updated schedule for both teams.  We are still trying to add another middleschool, if possible.  I'm sorry I'm late on this but I've been without e-mail for 8 days.
The Varsity plays tomorrow, April 14, 3:30, at Wilder's Grove v. Wake County Warriors
The Varsity plays Friday, April 17, 6:00 p.m., at Ravenscroft (this game was switched to Friday and Cary Christian canceled out due to a league makeup).
The middleschool plays Friday, April 17, at 4:00 at Honeycutt Park v. Carrol
The middleschool plays Saturday, April 18, 3:45, at Broughton, v. Heritage Generals
We plan to have a practice on Saturday morning, 10:30, for both teams.

That game has been changed to Wilder's Grove.  Lyrics don't necessarily have to be Christian but must meet the approval of the commissioner (me).  If you don't send us one, we will be forced to pick one for you (like from the soundtrack "Swan Lake").

Also, if you are on the monthly payment plan for fees, please try to get your April payments in.  And any uniform payments still due should also be made.

Hawks Basketball Updates

July 14, 2009

Hawks:   I changed the planned protocol last night and neglected to say some things that deserved to be mentioned.   For some reason I called all the seniors up at once to receive their gifts.  I had originally intended to give them out individually to make sure that everyone received individual recognition, especiall those who weren't selected for an award (although, with this season, all of them were considered).

I know it's a day late but I would feel it an injustice not to mention the following in appreciation:

Brandon Wells gave us two faithful years.  Being a novice player, he realized he would get limited playing time, but never complained and sincerely supported the other players.  Sometimes a player who doesn't  get a lot of court time will quit before the season ends, but Brandon stayed with it and, because of that, was a member of two championship teams (East Coast and States) and developed the kind of friendships with the other players that will last into the years.  He was the runner up in the selection of Christian Character.

Sam Morris made the decision last summer to be a fifth year senior.  Under the shadow of the duo from Brooklyn in 2008, Sam was hopeful this season would give him the opportunity to be a more dominative player on the varsity.  This goal was realized with All-Regional and All-State selections and it showed what someone can accomplish when they trust in the Lord and keep believing when things aren't going so well.  I'm going to miss Sam's antics and witty comments that made practices a lot more fun and bearable.

It won't be the same next year, either, without
Nick Henderson. He has been on our basketball teams for nine years and will also be sorely missed.  Nick showed great determination and character this season by gaining All-Conference honors this year and selection to the All-Star team, even though he had had major surgery in the spring of 08.  Nick was our leading rebounder for the past two years and, from my view, his best game was in the 2008 East Coast Championships where he blocked several shots and controlled the boards the whole game.  In that low scoring contest, I look at his performance in that game as being the key factor to gaining that championship banner. Nick's one nemesis was foul trouble.  But when he didn't foul out, we usually were on the winning side. And his success was no accident, either.  Nick always gave his all in practice and worked diligently on his own and at Networks to improve his game.

In case you weren't there, other awards were:

Outstanding Performance for 2008-09,  Kyle Fetterolf, Devin Gerney
Christian Character for 2008-09, Adam Sprecher
Most Valuable Player for 2008-09, Eric Stanley

Thanks, again, seniors for all your hard work and dedication.  The friendships you gained here are your true rewards.

Hawks:   Graduates/Alumni v. next year's Varsity (and varsity wannabes), 6:00 to 8:00 at the Baptist Seminary.  The cost is $5.00 per person.

There was not enough interest from middleschool and jv, so we will be only be having the one contest.  Try to be there on time because we must clear the building at five til eight.

At 8:00 we will go to a local restaurant.  Family is welcome to attend game and meal, but this won't be a full blown awards banquet like I hoped because many aren't able to make it.  It's my fault for putting it off for so long, but we are going to say good by to the seniors who attend.

Hawks: Directions to Tuesday's (Dec 16) games below. 5:00, 6:00 & 7:30 for ms, jv, var. Please be there no later than 45 minutes before game time. Because we have to share locker rooms with the general public, you may come in your uniform if you'd like. There will be no special dress requirement.

Also, there will be a players and parents meeting to discuss our post season tournament options on Friday, Dec 19, at the Louisburg gym at about 5:30. The varsity players are also interested in the national championships in Springfield, Mo., the following week. For parents who cannot make the meeting, I will bring information to the Durham games regarding costs, and payment deadlines to the Durham game on Saturday.

I am sending another e-mail because a lot of names were left off the last two e-mails. Most important is that we practice tomorrow, Friday, Oct 10, in LOUISBURG because Southeastern needs the gym for a conference. Please also note the information on uniforms. AND PLEASE LET ME KNOW THAT YOU RECEIVED THIS.

HAWKS: Our practice tomorrow, Friday, Oct 10, is at New Hope Worship Center in Louisburg:
noon to 2:00 for middleschool
1:00 to 3:00 for jv/varsity
These early practices on Fridays will return to the original times of 2:00-4:00 and 3:00 - 5:00 in November.

Our practice Monday, Oct 13, is ALSO at the NEW HOPE WORSHIP CENTER IN LOUISBURG (directions below)
2:00 to 4:00 middleschool
3:00 to 5:00 jv/varsity
We cannot always get the Ledford Center so the Louisburg gym is our backup (directions below).

Here are the uniform sizes for the new jv players and varsity players. The cost is $95. Please bring payment tomorrow. I cannot order the jerseys until all payments are in. Please check the jersey sizes below so that there are no mistakes:

Micah Lynch AXL both
Jordan Brooks AL both
Manny Williams AXL both
Caleb Knox AM jersey, AS shorts
Cameron Sisk??
Daniel Barnette AS both
Eric Stanley AXL jersey, AL shorts
Mark Page??
Reid Blanchard??

Devin Gerney XL shorts only
Chris Eaton, XL shorts only

If you need new shorts or a jersey the cost is $27 for the shorts and $68 for the jersey. But you must let me know by Friday. Players may request numbers at pratice tomorrow. Seniority goes by years on team and then by age.

We will not be ordering the middleschool jerseys this week. Payment is not due until I do.

Directions to Louisburg gym: New Hope Worship Center, 7428 Pearces Rd., Louisburg. I suggest Mapquest for your best route. But here are a couple of ways:

Come in by 98 (You can take I-40 to I-540 to Hwy 401 to 98) Before you reach downtown Bunn (if so, you've gone too far) you will take a left on Pearces Rd (it is not a traffic ight or 4 way stop sign, but does have a flashing yellow when side traffic enters the intersection). New Hope is about 1.5 miles up on the right on Pearces.

Come in on I-64 to the Zebulon/Oxford exit (HWY 96). Go left or north on 96 over the interstate and take a right at the Citgo station (Pearces Rd.) Take Pearces Rd. about 8 miles and cross over 98 (there is a stop sign). Continue on Pearces Rd. New Hope is about 1.5 miles up on the right.

Parents: We still have plenty of openings for our preseason basketball camp for boys ages 11 & up. It's in Louisburg and starts next Monday, Sept. 8, at noon. I know it may be a bit of a drive but I think your boys will say it's worth it. We have the skills and drills to bring them up to the next level in order to improve as a basketball player...the kind of drills that will increase their confidence for ball handling, sharpen their shooting skills around and under the basket and develop a consistent shot in the perimeter.... besides the good fun of some exciting mini-competition games weaved throughout the practice.

If you'd like, come to the first sessions and try it out. No charge. No obligation to sign up.

Hawks: We still have plenty of openings for our preseason camp. We'd like to get 16-20 out there, which makes the drills and mini competition more enjoyable. It's in Louisburg and starts next Monday, Sept. 8, at noon. This is also a good time to introduce a new person into the program. The cost is $50 for six two-hour sessions.

As for tryouts, only a few have e-mailed their intentions to play this fall for the Hawks. It's important that you let me know before tryouts on the 29th. I am going to take new players to fill up the vacant spots on each team. I can't hold you a spot unless you let me know beforehand.

As for team practices, we are still working on the Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest. But, like last year, we will be in Louisburg until a better location is found.
